Director of Public Health
Salary: £120,043 - £128,456 per annum (pay award pending)
As a young and ambitious unitary authority, West Northamptonshire Council is an exciting place to work. Demographically diverse, we also present unique challenges and plenty of opportunities. One half of West Northants is rural and affluent, with an older population, and some issues of isolation and connectivity. In contrast we have one of the largest market towns in the area, covering half our population, characterised by a much younger population, density and significant deprivation and poor health prevalence. Despite these differences, all areas share a common goal: to drive better health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities. Our new One West Northants Plan outlines our collective ambition to achieve this, with our Thriving People and Thriving Places priorities shared by the local authority, health, community and voluntary groups, as well as our residents.
We are currently seeking to appoint our next Director of Public Health who will play a pivotal role, shaping and delivering plans for our One West Northamptonshire vision and our desire to make a significant difference to life outcomes and wellbeing over the next five years and beyond.
Working closely with partners you will drive forward wider wellbeing, place shaping and preventative work as well as working hand in hand with partners on the population health agenda within the Integrated Care System and our place based Integrated Care Partnerships, for the delivery of local services to meet local need.
Our DPH will be a visible system leader and at the core of our local response to the NHS 10-year plan, for the three big shifts and the design of Health and Care Neighbourhoods, which should drive a big shift towards prevention and keeping more people well in their communities. These will compliment out family hubs and the wider work we are doing with partners and the VCSE to create a vital support network based on local needs.
We have a strong Public Health team that sits within our People directorate under an Executive Director of People, and which brings together Adult social care, Wellbeing, Children's Services, Public Health and Local Area Partnerships, to ensure real synergy in our thinking and plans. Public Health also work closely across Council directorates and partners to ensure that the wider determinants of health are considered in all aspects of place shaping and future plans.
This role is responsible to the Chief Executive and sits on our Executive Leadership Team alongside our executive director posts and the other statutory post holders including the DASS, DCS and Director for Housing.
We have a strong culture of teamwork and shared ambition at the council and a recent LGA corporate peer review concluded that our staff love to work here and that there was a buzz of excitement as we looked to the future as an organisation.
If you have the ambition and expertise to progress your career and help us make a real impact for people and communities in West Northamptonshire, then we would love to hear from you. Prerequisites for shortlisting include public health specialist registration with the GMC, GDC or UKPHR and that you have evidenced significant consultant-level public health experience and a proven track record of establishing effective working relationships to drive health improvement.
Closing date: midnight on Sunday 27th April 2025
